Rapid City is home to such attractions as Art Alley, Dinosaur Park, the City of Presidents walking tour, Chapel in the Hills, Storybook Island, and Main Street Square. Camp Rapid, part of the South Dakota Army National Guard, is in the city's western part. Ellsworth Air Force Base is on the city's outskirts. Known as the "Gateway to the Black Hills" and the "City of Presidents" because of the life-size bronze president statues downtown, Rapid City is split by a low mountain ridge that divides the city's western and eastern parts. The population was 74,703 as of the 2020 Census. Named after Rapid Creek, where the settlement developed, it is in western South Dakota, on the Black Hills' eastern slope. Nearest commercial airport is in Rapid City, South Dakota.Rapid City is the second most populous city in South Dakota after Sioux Falls and the county seat of Pennington County. No public transportation serves the park. Follow South Daktoa Highway 87 south into Wind Cave National Park.Highway 385 north through Hot Springs, South Dakota, to the park. The park is about 20 miles south of Custer, South Dakota, off U.S. Highway 385 south to Hill City and continue south through Custer City. Once in the park follow signs to the visitor center for cave tours and general park information.Highway 385 another 6 miles north and into Wind Cave National Park. Highway 385 north, then continue through Hot Springs. Follow South Dakota Highway 79 south approximately 50 miles to U.S.The coordinates for the Visitor Center are N43 33' 22" W103 28' 38". Many GPS units locate the park visitor center north on South Dakota Highway 87. Do not use your GPS to find the visitor center - you will get lost. Highway 385, about 1/2 mile west from the highway. The Visitor Center is located 11 miles north of Hot Springs off U.S.
